Late Autumn at Steep Rock Reservation. The fall colors this year were subdued compared to many other years, but what color was there has lasted much later than usual into the season.

Weekend Workshop

Washington, Connecticut

Teaching a private workshop this weekend. Yesterday we did the soup-to-nuts Pt/Pd workshop. Begin by shooting a set of 4x5 inch pictures in a local park, looking for subjects and lighting that will benefit from the advantages of film exposure and platinum printing. Then develop the film, and by mid-afternoon we're able to begin to make palladium prints of the morning's film. These are yesterday's prints this morning on the drying screens. Today, more printing, and then make digital negatives from a couple of these and from digital captures made at the same time as the 4x5s, finally print a few of these at 9" wide. Busy busy.

Workshop About Everything

 Washington, Connecticut

Well, everything "platinum printing." Today I began a four day intensive individual workshop with a photographer from Brazil. We began by shooting new material both on 5x7 film and with digital capture in some nice nearby locations. The workshop will deal with making platinum/palladium prints both in the traditional manner by contact from in-camera negatives, and also from digital negatives prepared both from negative scans and from digital capture. Like I said, everything.

After developing the film we did an orientation on the digital negative process and took a break, then made several prints from this morning's 5x7 negatives.

Four days is a really long one-on-one workshop. I expect it's going to be both exhausting and exhilarating.

Autumn Woods, II

Washington, Connecticut

It's been longer than usual since I've visited the Hidden Valley section of Steep Rock Reservation. Along with the fall colors, I found extensive storm damage with trees down everywhere along the trail that loops for a couple miles through the area. Also, this summer's wild, uncharacteristic density of growth in the underbrush and climbing invasive species was in evidence everywhere.
